also known as the Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan, was founded by Maharaja
Suraj Mal in 1733 AD. The place was named Bharatpur after the name of
Bharat. The interesting aspect of the Bharatpur history is the
domination of Jats in this region since 17th century. Since then Suraj
Mal has been the greatest ruler who made them into a very strong force
and has been known in the Indian history for its important role during
the period.Maharaja Suraj Mal gathered a force of martial Jat peasants and went on from one success to another. He built numerous forts and palaces across the kingdom including the Pleasure Palace complex at Deeg. Bharatpur is today known the world over for its Keoladeo Ghana National Park. PLACES TO SEE IN BHARATPUR Keoladeo National Park Keoladeo National Park is a paradise for the avian world, and also known as the pilgrimage for the bird lovers. Declared as bird reserve in 1956, it was later upgraded to National Park and UNESCO has even listed it as a world heritage site. Lohagarh Fort or the 'Iron Fort' The Lohagarh Fort is famous for solid iron finish which always frustrated the Britishers whenever they attacked the fort. Lord Lake however was successful in capturing it in 1804. This Lohagarh Fort is a true example of strength and magnificence. The building then known as the Kamra Khas within the fort has now been converted into a government museum. There is a huge collection of exquisite sculptures, antiquaries and ancient inscriptions. These art sculptures tell the old legendary stories of their bravery and magnificence. The inscriptions are of immense historical value and helps in tracing back the royal history as well as the then cultural traditions, etc. HOW TO REACH By Air The nearest airport is Agra, which is about 54 kms from Bharatpur.
