Plain, the capital city, Delhi, unwinds a picture rich with culture,
architecture and human diversity, deep in history, monuments, museums,
galleries, gardens and exotic shows. Comprising of two contrasting yet
harmonious parts, the Old Delhi and New Delhi, the city is a travel hub
of Northern India.New Delhi has expanded and now encompasses residential and commercial development to the west and south, plus the satellite towns of Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad. The design of India Gate is almost similar to its French counterpart war memorial, the Arc-de-Triomphe. RED FORT The Red Fort is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Delhi, attracting millions of visitors every year. Emperor Shah Jahan built Delhi's most magnificent monument, the Red Fort. In 1638 Shah Jahan shifted the Mughal Empire's capital from Agra to Delhi. A new royal palace known as Red Fort (Lal Qila) was constructed. It was begun in 1639 and completed in 1648. Located at the eastern edge of Shahjahanabad, the Red Fort derives its name from the huge walls of red sandstone that characterize the eight sides of the fort. The length of the wall is 2.5km and is 33m high. JAMA MASJID Jama Masjid, the Friday congregational mosque, in Delhi is the largest and glorious mosque in India. It was the last architectural extravaganza of the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan built in the year 1656 AD with the help of 5,000 craftsmen. The measurement of the mosque is 65 m X 35 m while the courtyard forms an area of 100 n square. Jama Masjid has the capacity to hold as many as 25,000 devotees. The mosque has three gateways, four towers and two minarets. It is constructed with alternate use of vertical strips of red sandstone and white marble. The Qutab Minar was started in 1199 AD by Qutub-ud-Din Aibak and completed by the sultan's successor and son-in-law, Iltutmish. The building is 72.5 m high and has 379 steps from the bottom to the top. The Qutab Minar is tapering with the diameter of the base is 14.3 m while at the top floor it is 2.7 m. Viewing it is a truly surreal experience as Qutab Minar is still the highest stone tower as well as one of the finest Islamic structures ever raised in India. It is covered with intricate carvings and deeply inscribed verses from the Koran. It is made of red and buff sandstone.
