city of Jaisalmer is famous for its havelis that were built by the
merchants during 19th century. These havelis are beautifully carved from
golden-yellow sandstone that makes city a very famous spot amongst
tourists. Jaisalmer, the city which is famous for its trading is also
known as the Golden City because of its commercially viable routing for
camels. All these years have seen the beauty of the monuments of
Jaisalmer that withstood the harsh winds of the desert all through. Its
an example of beautiful culture and harsh climatic conditions, together
giving a memorable experience for a perfect vacation.The bank, offices and several shops are also located near the Amar Sagar Gate to the west. The best time to visit this place is the winter season. PLACES TO SEE IN JAISALMER Jaisalmer Fort The famous Jaisalmer Fort stands almost 30 metres above the city and houses an entire living area within huge ramparts. It gives you a lifetime experience as in walking through the narrow lanes. It houses some very beautiful havelis and a group of Jain temples. Te fort is made of golden yellow sandstone which is about 800 years old. Salim Singh ki Haveli Salim Singh ki haveli was built about 300 years ago and a part of it is still occupied. Salim Singh was the prime minister when Jaisalmer was the capital of the princely state. His mansion has a beautifully arched roof and also peacock shaped carved brackets. This is one of the largest and most elaborate Haveli in Jaisalmer and stands in a narrow lane. Patwon ji ki havelis is about five storeys high and is beautifully carved. It has six apartments, two owned by Archaeological Survey of India, two by families who operate craft-shops and two private homes.
