Abu is the only hill station in Rajasthan. With its very rich scenic
beauties, temples, gardens & parks and great history, Mount Abu is
one of the major pilgrimage sites of India for both Hindu as well as
Jain religions. Mount Abu was the home of many saints and sages in the
old days. The city of Mount Abu was at one time a part of the Chauhan kingdom of Rajasthan and was then treated as a summer palace for the Rajput kings of the region. Later on the Britishers hired this place from Maharaja of Sirohi and used it as their headquarters. The small huts and cottages here tell stories of those times even today. PLACES TO SEE IN MOUNT ABU Gaumukh Temple Gaumukh Temple gets its name from the small stream that flows from the mouth of a marble cow. There is another marble figure also for the bull Nandi, Shiva's vehicle. The agni kund in this temple is said to have the sacrificial fire, made by sage Vashistha, from which four of the great Rajput clans were born. The devotees come from all over the world and walk through some 750 steps down to the valley. Museum & Art Gallery Another major attraction of this place is the museum and art gallery. The museum is divided into two sections - first section represents a local tribal hut with their living style by adding a gallery of weapons, musical instruments, ladies ornaments like barly, damani, karna, kanksi berla, various type of earrings and garments etc. The second section has a series of miniature paintings based on raga-ragnis, lain images from Sirohi, medium sized shields, a small canon called 'Topdi' and some pieces of carvings on local wood. Beautiful gardens and parks add to the beauty of this remarkable hill station in Rajasthan. Some of the beautifully laid gardens and parks include Ashok Vatika, Gandhi Park, Municipal Park, Shaitan Singh Park and Terrace Garden, etc. HOW TO REACH By Air The nearest airport is Udaipur, which is 185 km away from Mount Abu.
